*– GAME OVERVIEW –*
_Popeye_ for the Famicom and Nintendo Entertainment System is a 2D fixed-screen platformer. The game was ported by Nintendo Research & Development No. 1 (Nintendo R&D1) and published by Nintendo. It was released in Japan on July 15, 1983, in North America in June 1986 and in Europe on September 1, 1986.
• _Popeye_ began as a coin-operated video game for the North American arcade (AC) market. It was released by Nintendo on November 8, 1982.
◦ The game was designed by Genyo Takeda – creator of the _Punch-Out!!_ series – and Shigeru Miyamoto. Some sources say that Ikegami Tsushinki did the programming work.
◦ It is based on the American comic strip of the same name, created by E. C. Segar and licensed by King Features Syndicate.
• The characters in _Popeye_ were originally intended for the game that became _Donkey Kong,_ starring Mario, Donkey Kong and Pauline – [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkMYX4BMv58] – but Nintendo was unable to license the property at the time.
• _Popeye_ is one of three launch titles for the Famicom, along with _Donkey Kong_ and _Donkey Kong Jr._
◦ It is the first licensed game for the system.
◦ The system also got an educational spin-off, _Popeye Lingo Game (ポパイの英語遊び, Popeye no Eigo Asobi,_ lit. _Popeye's English Game)_ (1983).
• Namco Networks brought a remake of _Popeye_ to mobile phones in 2007.
◦ In 2021, independent developer Sabec Limited released an updated version of the game – with 3D graphics – for the Nintendo Switch (NSW) and Sony PlayStation 4 (PS4).
