Popful Mail [ Super Nintendo ] - Intro & Gameplay
Since I am so unmotivated to make anything now thanks to the new YouTube rules, I am uploading two basic gameplay videos of less known games.
This is Popful Mail.
Popful Mail is a game developed by the amazing company Falcom, known for their amazing Ys and Dragon Slayer series ( I.e. Sorcerian, Romancia ). Originally released for PC-88 like many other of their games, Popful Mail stars the local bounty hunter and attractive elf Popful Mail in her quest to score the big booty.
Namely, her quest in capturing the elusive Muttonhead for the 2,000,000 gold reward!
As always however, things don't always go the way you expect and perhaps there's deeper machinations at work ...
Over the course of the game, you'll gain other compatriots who'll join you on your journey and who you can switch into on the fly with the push of a button, making this the second game of Falcom's that feature character swapping ( the first being Sorcerian ). I could be wrong but I do believe this is one of the earliest games if not one of the first to feature this, at least in non-fighting games. This is a feature they'd then repeat again in Ys 7 & Ys 8. The game also plays a lot like Ys III, although I'd argue a lot smoother. At least compared to the Super Nintendo version.
Overall, Popful Mail is a very very charming and adorable game much in the same veins as Wonder Boy / Monster Land series.
They did once try to get a Popful Mail anime going but unfortunately, it never came into fruition, but if you look for it on YouTube you will find the video they sent out for it, featuring the song "No No Pessimist!", very cute video, very 90's anime!
PS. Getting a Game Over just sends you back to the closest auto-checkpoint the game have as well, making it also one of the earliest games to feature such a thing too.
