This is Ys III: Wanderers from Ys

Yes, just like Ys I & II, Ys III was also originally on the PC-88 ( 1989 ) and has since been ported to every system imaginable! Not only that, it saw a pseudo-port/remake on PS2 while at the same time, getting a completely new remake of it made as well called Oath in Felghana.

I don't remember when I first played this game, but I remember it being interesting but hard. I never completed it however as I'd lose interest at a point in favor of playing other games, but it is a good one. I believe the Sega Genesis version is infamous for having one of the worst box arts in existence, a complete nonsensical story change, and it was mocked in the anime short series called Falcom Academy, when all kinds of iterations of Adol appeared.

Including my favorite, Ys II: Castle in the Heaven's Adol.
