With patch 6.1 just around the corner and the machinist being quite literally the first job mentioned in the balance changes slide I actually want to talk about the state of physical ranged DPS in final fantasy 14.

I won’t beat around the bush, as I reform the last few slots of my static for DSR as some had to leave due to work concerns and thank God I’m down to the last slot as of last night, one thing has become painfully obvious: ranged physical DPS is the hardest DPS role to fill in my groups by far. Not just a little, often times I’ve sat in a full pf group even with tanks for over half an hour for a 2 chest P1 or P2 party on a Wednesday or Thursday evening with an item level 580 requirement. Which genuinely shocked me because if I wasn’t healer I actually really enjoy ranged physical.

While all of this can be taken with a grain of salt as it is anecdotal, when I reached out to friends and various parts of the community they resonated with what I said and the message was so loud and so clear that, well, I decided to make a video on it.

This breaks down into 3 major problems:
-First of all is the ranged physical dps tax.
-Secondly is the community perception
-Thirdly is a lot of people don’t enjoy the kits for various reasons such as they give up their own DPS and they need to reposition themselves to open up mechanics for melee or casters and fundamentally feel like the more submissive or bottom role so to speak. Which to say the least rubs salt in the wound for many.

Let’s start with the first point, ranged physical DPS tax. Should that even be relevant today? So for players who might not be that familiar with what the ranged physical DPS tax is, it’s the idea that if you are a ranged physical DPS that you should be doing less damage than a melee DPS or black mage.

In essence, the fact that you aren’t in melee range or aren’t juggling cooldowns to ensure your cast times are able to be fired off as much as possible means you should simply do less damage.

But now the question is, should it be?

When we look at the changes the machinist is getting the slide says it’s potency increases to multiple actions including drill, heatblast and wildfire. Raw damage is the focus here. The machinist offers no unique utility of its own unlike the dancer and bard jobs that at least have some unique personal utility!

Which means essentially all it has is its damage. Which when you look at reaper that has unique mobility abilities and arcane crest to contribute party wide AOE healing on virtually every AOE on a 30 second cooldown and does top damage really is rubbing salt in the wound.

Add in factors like your damage output is necessary to beat enrage timers and with tighter enrage timers for savage in party finder groups it’s not a surprise ranged physical probably is the most frustrated DPS job to take into PF with so much less agency over their damage. Either you’re low total rDPS as machinist or completely dependent on your team mates as dancer or bard with wildly swinging buff damage contributions depending on your team mates performance. That’s not a comfortable spot to be in.

Building on top of that, ultimately this has implications on why are we taking a ranged physical DPS into our group for a particular piece of content? Which people have unironically been theorycrafting if they would be better off dropping the 1% extra bonus from having a physical ranged DPS for replacing them with a black mage.
