Nobody puts Scholar in the corner! Expedient has been and will remain absolutely strong! Scholar has always been and will remain my main since the days of A Realm Reborn and these nerfs are doing nothing to make me regret continuing that decision!

Some incredibly large job changes are coming with patch 6.1 that will absolutely impact a few jobs quite significantly and sitting on these changes for a few days now I’ve come to form my own opinion and because people asked now I’m going to share it here!

So first up is near and dear to my heart cause I’m back to my main, Scholar, for raiding this expansion. Scholar got an incredibly powerful nerf to Expedient which will be cutting the duration in half for the sprint buff. From 20 seconds all the way down to 10. Looking purely at the numbers yeah that’s quite significant.

But here is where the larger context is critical, expedient fundamentally boost’s the entire party’s ability to handle mechanics because the mass majority of mechanics in 14 are movement and positioning based and expedient is the one and only skill in 14 that impacts it in combat outside of baseline sprint. Where the baseline sprint duration is 10 seconds.

Expedient chained with sprint is 20 seconds duration. Which all things considered is awesome.

But reality is there are also many mechanics that in the current savage tier I’d consider largely made easier with expedient. Fourfold shackles on P1S with timer strat, P2S second coherence or even third coherence where I’ve been unfortunately tossed into PF where people run like everywhere in a confused frenzy and a speed boost helps, or P2S the limitcut ability where people need to get to their particular spots and so on. Past raids even more examples like E10S orange or purple orbs where you all need to position fast or die or E12S line lions.

My point is, through all of those examples if someone asked me or many others I’ve spoken to would we take an extra sprint for the entire party during key moments the answer is hands down one hundred percent yes.

Note though that yeah we could argue everyone could pop sprint here, but if you are in a static with a Scholar that knows whats up and when to time and pop things you can place sprint elsewhere. Which can allow you to optimize or resolve other mechanics better with sprint. A consistent Scholar you can depend on using this properly will free you up to do more.

10 extra seconds of sprint every 2 minutes is great. In a 20 minute fight you can cast that 10 times. In a 10 minute fight 5 times. That’s 10 or 5 mechanics you get to pick and choose to use expedient, and that’s absolutely going to be powerful.

And will 10 seconds last entire line lions? No, but you can be picky and choosey on when you use it. Figure out a pain point with your group and slam it down there. Like maybe after the second reposition where people need to run from the D safe stack marker out to the other side of the north south lions to bait?

Now the second part of this is kind of about player psychology, and I started this expansion really really wanting to do Sage and some people reacted over time with disgust at it. In fact there are raid members that I lost earlier this tier that were strongly pushing for me to go Scholar explicitly for Expedient when I really was on the Sage train.

And let me be clear, Sage is super strong and has a ton of very real perks. But the difference between Sage and Scholar is not that Sage is simply a worst version of Scholar cause it has no expedient. Like Dragonsong’s Reprise Ultimate mechanics might at the very end of the day push me to Sage if say Haima and Panhaima being split rather than combined as Seraph with seraphic veil and consolation or single target damage is better resolved with the 10% mitigation of taurochole.

Or maybe a mechanic is better resolved with successive weaker barriers than a massively huge bonkers obscene barrier.

Of course everything here could be spun around to be like but during dragonsong’s reprise if you are forced to cast a lot of on GCD heals maybe you can’t proc Kardia that much so a fairy can sustain better.
