Rayman 2: The Great Escape w/ 3D spatial sound 🎧 (OpenAL Soft HRTF audio)
Use headphones only with any virtual surround features turned off. Installation instructions linked below. Gameplay starts at 1:25.
After nearly 20 years of Rayman 2's Aureal A3D capabilities remaining a mystery, someone by the name of "deton24" was finally able to make a custom driver that enabled the 3D sound in this game. With a combination of Creative's a3dx5, Aureal's A2D wrapper, DSOAL, and OpenAL Soft, it is now possible to play one of your favorite childhood games with full binaural audio on any modern PC without the need for a soundcard.
Well, sort of.
While the spatialized sound is truly remarkable, there are two huge issues that ruin the Aureal A3D 2.0 emulation with DSOAL. The first is a broken doppler effect whenever the camera moves that causes sounds to break pitch. You'll notice it at 1:44 with the ceiling fans and whenever the "intrigue" jingle goes hilariously off-key. What's not so hilarious, however, is the second issue: Rayman 2 runs out of buffers at 15:33 and the game goes silent. Perhaps I jumped the gun with this demo, but hopefully kcat can figure out what's going wrong if I send error logs. The A3D-Live .dlls would just crash persistently, BTW.
I'm playing this with the widescreen patch and dgVoodoo2 linked below. I also had to boost the footage's audio by 7.4dB because Rayman 2 is really quiet for some reason. BTW, if anybody knows a reliable way to get Tonic Trouble working on Windows 64-bit, let me know because the PCGamingWiki method did not work at all.
