Whereas Quake 4's single-player was a generic, slow-paced campaign typical of 2005 FPS titles, the multiplayer oddly enough was the total opposite. It's basically an update to Quake III Arena with a Nailgun, a rebalanced BFG in the Dark Matter Gun, crouch sliding, and the ability to shoot projectiles through teleporters. It's absolutely wonderful and feels much smoother to play than the clunkiness of Quake Champions. The fact that ID and Raven didn't push this mode more is probably why Arena Shooters died in the wake of Halo 2 and CS:S.

Strangely, the binaural audio is noticeably worse in multiplayer than in single-player. It's much harder to hear where other players are coming from as opposed to hearing enemy Stroggs in total darkness. I wonder if it's a side effect of having to balance the game for internet connections of the time? In any case, Quake 4's multiplayer sounds worse than Yamagi Quake II or ioquake3 but still better than FTE Quakeworld.

I'm playing this with the Q4MAX client that rebalances the game for tournament play and adds in some truly frustrating bots. Some of the tricks these guys pull border on Nightmare Xaero-levels of bullshit. Also just a heads-up: I won't be recording tournament demos as they all rely on custom maps that were lost to time. I also won't be doing Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Even though Tweakguides said ET:QW uses OpenAL, it would consistently crash every time I forced it in the demo with either CMSS-3D or OAL Soft. Oh well, nothing of value was lost...
