Playthrough with Yamazaki. Real Bout Fatal Fury was released in 1995, only a few months after Fatal Fury 3. Apparently the previous game hadn't done too well, so SNK came up with the idea of re-using unsold FF3 carts and converting them into Real Bout. Having a quick look through Real Bout's sprite viewer on Kawaks reveals that there are a number of unused sprites from FF3 in it, such as art from the intro.

Anyway, back to Real Bout. The game plays completely differently to the previous entry as the controls were changed. There are now three attack buttons and another button for changing planes. The game is much more combo-orientated and faster paced, and this is also the first Fatal Fury game to feature a super bar, with two different levels of desperation attacks available.

The way the super moves work is that the bar will go up when you attack the opponent. Once it's full, you have a limited amount of time to use a desperation move. If your life gauge decreases to the point where it starts flashing, you can use desperation moves as many times as you want. If you have a full super gauge and a flashing life bar, you can use your character's potential power move, which are super powerful moves that do more damage and have different animations when compared to regular desperation attacks.

All of the characters from the previous game are playable, including the bosses. Three extra characters were also added: Billy, Kim and Duck King. The backgrounds are also new, but sadly there aren't that many of them. Most of them do feature breakable objects at either side, and it's possible to knock the opponent out of the ring, letting you win the fight without having to completely deplete the opponent's life gauge.

SNK also wised up to the fact that more people might play their games if they didn't make the CPU so obnoxiously difficult, and this game is much easier than the previous one. It isn't a cake-walk, but for the most part you can get through it without having to abuse some A.I. exploit... aside from Geese. If you jump forward and do an A button attack in the air, Geese is most likely going to use his counter, even though you're in no danger of getting hit by it. So whilst he's doing that, you can land and get a combo in, then repeat.
