Remembrances of Games Past, Part #29 - Mass Effect (2007) (Xbox 360/PC) (Bioware)
The original Mass Effect didn't leave much of an impression after the hectic weekend in 2007 during which I blazed through all the story quests. Sure, I thought the game was one of Bioware's better post-Baldur's Gate efforts, with a much less schizophrenic and unsatisfying combat system than Neverwinter Nights, Jade Empire and KOTOR (three games which disappointed me); but beyond that I didn't spend a lot of time thinking about it when I was done with it.
After having finished Mass Effect 2 I returned to ME1 and played through it again so that I could import a second character into ME2 for my Insanity playthrough, and for some reason found myself appreciating the whole sci-fi RPG experience a lot more. I wholeheartedly agree with the mainstream opinion that the second game in the series is both superior and arguably also one of the best games ever made, but the messier and technically inferior first game still has its own peculiar charm due to a larger, more epic game world, a greater emphasis on stats development, a surprisingly hardcore approach to New Game+ (a level 60 character takes several consecutive playthroughs etc.) and that awesome minimalist soundtrack.
I play the Mass Effect series on its lead platform (Xbox 360), but since it was so cheap I also picked up the PC version of ME1 in one of those Steam sales, and I can appreciate that the studio responsible for the port (Demiurge) were able to take care of some of the completely unnecessary texture popping and frame rate issues which plagued the Xbox version of the first game.
