Fallout: New Vegas (Gameplay #9)
So far, the main storyline of New Vegas is much better paced with a considerably more satisfying dramatic build-up than the repetitive In Search of Lost Dad which comprised Fallout 3's narrative. In Obsidian's take on the FO3 experience, the player starts in the middle of nowhere (with a thankfully brief tutorial/character creation section) and then has to slowly work him or herself up in the world, before finally being able to enter the city of New Vegas itself where the really powerful people are (note: only the surrounding slums of Vegas, known as "Freeside", are shown in this video).
A nice touch is that no matter where you are, the landmark skyscrapers (the few still standing, that is) of that world-famous Capital of Second Chances are almost always visible in the distance; their neon lights contrasting sharply with the surrounding desert and beckoning the player with something concrete to reach for (both metaphorically and physically). If nothing else, it's a design choice which stands out from the unstructured, free-form experience of most open world games.
