Project Snowblind is a game I thought about buying when it came out in 2005 but finally decided not to since I read in various reviews that it was quite short. I recently found a retail copy online for around 2€ (!) and decided it was time to finally check it out. My impression from the first few levels or so is definitely a positive one.

The game is in some ways a spiritual successor to the Deus Ex series, although there are no RPG elements this time around and the gameplay is based entirely on conventional shooter mechanics. The game also has a distinct console feel to it, as it was clearly produced (by Legacy of Kain and Tomb Raider developer Crystal Dynamics) with PS2 and Xbox 1 as the lead platforms rather than the PC.

That being said, the game does the whole linear shooter experience really well and has a modern feel to it with tense but carefully scripted set pieces and cinematic cutscenes seamlessly interwoven with the gameplay. There are also a few neat augmentations which the player can activate in order to temporarily gain abilities such as X-ray vision, a force field-like shield against bullets or control over enemy mechs (which is very satisfying, to say the least).

Project Snowblind may not be a revolutionary genre hybrid like Deus Ex, but it provides enjoyable FPS gameplay which at this point should be well worth spending a few bucks on.
