Developed by Technos, and a predecessor to Double Dragon, Renegade slams onto PS4's Arcade Archives. The object of the game is beat up people. Each round has different types of enemies, as well a boss who joins the fights once there are only three guys left. After you finish the game's 4 levels, it continues from the first round, albeit slightly more difficult, on top of a game that is already incredibly tough to complete, even on the easiest setting. The controls are weird. You hit square to attack left, x to jump, and circle to attack right. Enemies in front will meet your fist with their face, while enemies behind you take a kick in the groin. You can press left or right twice to dash, which you can follow through with a punch or jumpkick. You also can sit on top and pummel your opponents. Trying to align your attacks on the same plane as the enemy can be a real pain in the ass. And missing is usually punished. Stationary jump kicking is safer, but is totally awkward and you can't move while in midair. For that you need the running jump. It all feels very contrived. I like the way the characters look and I'm glad that all of the stages are different, with unique badguys, or badgirls, but the repeating voices get annoying quickly. Most people won't see past the third level, the one with all the chicks, because the boss is total a manhandler. The last level is one-shot kills which feels kind of cheap. It's easier if you keep rushing them down and dash-attacking. Overall, Renegade is a difficult beat em up with tough controls. Don't be fooled by the advertising that says this game is 2 player-- it's not. Because you gotta take turns. We would have to wait another year for double dragon to come to the arcade before we had co-op.
