[Rush] MAP12: The Destination (UV-Max Demo)
make yourself a bucket of popcorn and get comforortable, because this is a feature-length doom presentation.
i'll be completely honest here: i don't really think magnum opus maps like this one are generally good, even if they have a lot of love and care put in to them. the map is massive and has tons of different encounters and keeping it all straight is a lot of effort in its own right. i took notes on what i wanted to do when and it wound up being a neat and tidy 38-step process. i might post on my website eventually but it needs a couple updates to match the route i actually wound up using; it's probably too long to fit in this description. the short version is that we prioritize getting the plasma and bfg, then tackle the remaining encounters in decreasing orders of riskiness. it took a good amount of trial and error to figure out what to do in the small locked room with the cyberdemon, but the strategy i came up with wound up being very consistent in practice as well as actual runs. oh and watch out for all the specters; i really couldn't see them at all.
oh and one unfortunate bit, if you watch the whole video: the exit door is some complicated contraption involving six voodoo dolls and it wound up getting stuck. so i'm a kill and an exit short of a proper uv-max, but i don't really care enough to redo this whole thing. take your complaints to management if it bothers you.
and with rush done - and watching vytaan play through the same set of maps - i feel maybe a little dispirited? he had a much easier time with these maps than i did. part of me wonders if i just overcomplicated the routes i took. but maybe it's a little too easy to think you're not making any progress in the moment. he had just made it through italo doom, after all. maybe i'll come back to this map in a year and see if i can get an actually complete demo that's faster and takes less effort. i also want to slot in a similarly skill-expanding wad on the channel... but i haven't decided what, yet. there's a couple other fun things lined up in addition to moonblood and tetanus, but nothing this beefy.
p.s. i really like this midi, although i muted it at points while making the demo for variety. apparently it's from a solitaire game??
