Rustler the mediocre medieval GTA clone
177Today we're looking at Rustler, an open-world action game often described as a kind of medieval Grand Theft Auto, and that pretty much sums it up. You play as Guy. He's no shining knight, no Chosen One, no king in exile. No. Just Guy, a run-of-the-mill medieval petty criminal who can't read or write, but with the ambition of a peasant and the morals of a drunken mercenary. Guy doesn't have a grand destiny, but he'd like to. And since in the Middle Ages, anyone could become a nobleman through bribery, violence, or a tournament, Guy decides to give his career a little boost. Unfortunately, the grand tournament that elevates the winner to nobility isn't all that easy to reach. But against all odds, he sets out not only to beat up a lot of people, but also to take on jobs for a lot of strange characters, including the Spanish Inquisition. And here we can already see where the developers got their inspiration.
The idea looks great on paper, but when you get about halfway through the campaign, you realize that it all kind of fizzles out. The original Grand Theft Auto has many weaknesses, but the key to the original's success is allowing the player to create as much chaos as possible without neglecting the satire. Rustler fails here, mainly because it tries to be funny or edgy in some way, but unfortunately, the sandbox world structure has been somewhat neglected. Rustler's world seems less satirical than parodic. It doesn't try to criticize the world like Grand Theft Auto, but instead prefers to make jokes about feces. That's quite funny at first, but unfortunately, it gets a bit lame in the long run, even though the basis of the story isn't all that bad in principle.
