Hype - The Playmobil game that wanted to be Zelda
Today's game has the wonderful name Hype The Time Quest and was developed by Ubisoft and published by Sony in 2001. Back then, Ubisoft tried by hook or by crook to sell this title to us as a Zelda Ocarina of Time clone. That could theoretically be true, but unfortunately, Hype is much shorter, not nearly as profound, and far less of the big hype the name would have us believe.
Hype whisks us away to the beautiful medieval world of small Bavarian plastic figures. You slip into the role of the brave knight, who just happens to have the same name as the game, who offers his service to King Taskan the Fourth. Life could be so beautiful if it weren't for the evil knight Barnak, who not only wants to take over the kingdom but also endangers our hero's fiancée. Our hero is transformed into a statue by the king's archenemy and catapulted into the past. He now has to pick his own path by traveling through four consecutive Taskan dynasties to defeat Barnak and save the empire and, of course, his estranged wife. And he even gets to ride dragons! Now that's a great selling point!
