The first Larry is a cultural asset!
I don't know if you knew, but Leisure Suit Larry In The Land Of The Lounge Lizards, which was released in '87, was already a remake of a game published in '81 by Sierra, then still known as Online Systems. This game had the wonderful name Softcorn Adventure. It was one of the first games aimed at an adult audience, but back then it didn't have any images, as it was a purely text adventure. There were indeed difficulties finding a publisher for this game at the time, but luckily, developer Charles Benton found a new home at Sierra. To help sell the title, Ken Williams had his wife Roberta climb into a hot tub with two other ladies from the company, namely Diane Siegal, Sierra's production manager, and accountant Susan Davis, dressed as God created them, complete with a dressed waiter. This iconic image was then to be used as the cover for the game Softcorn Adventure, but unfortunately, this didn't do much to boost sales.
Six years later, Ken Williams came up with the idea of reviving this classic in color and style thanks to new technology. And they already had a programmer on hand to make these wet dreams come true. Al Lowe, a former music teacher but talented developer of children's software like Donald Duck's Playground, who was working on the third King's Quest installment at the time, was now tasked with bringing Larry Laffer to life. It was a huge surprise for him, too, and who could have guessed back then that this lovable caricature of the unsuccessful womanizer would become such a huge success?
