Secret of Evermore - Self-Imposed Challenge Run Part 15: Continuing the battle
Rules so far:
-No switching to the Dog in an active combat area unless absolutely necessary
-Dog must not be dropped to 0 HPs
-Pixie Dust, Wings, and Call Beads are not allowed
-Alchemy restrictions to be determined
-Bone Crusher banned after Thraxx; all other Swords banned
-All Spear weapon restrictions to be determined
-Jade Disc, Moxa Stick, Armor Polish, Chocobo Egg, and Spiky Collar banned for Antiqua
-Most rules disabled for convenience in non-threatening areas
New rule explanation:
-Antiqua-based bans: The Jade Disc and Moxa Stick can both be traded away for stronger armor, which I did do anyway. The Chocobo Egg can be traded away for the Magic Gourd, which has NO effect other than something involving shopping. The Armor Polish can be traded out for the Silver Sheath, which just strengths Swords, or is supposed to anyway but ends up being active without being in the player's possession. The Armor Polish wasn't needed in the last part anyway due to Vigor doing too little damage for it to make a difference. All of these can be reobtained later. As for the Spiky Collar? It easily adds up in tandem with the Dog's already absurd Physical DEF growth, which begs for making the rule for keeping him alive redundant. I think I'd rather want to try to treat him as I would a Glass Cannon AI ally, thank you.
Guard fun: 2:30
Prophet fun: 28:21
This part is basically filler, despite Private Hazard being back in the saddle. I took my time having it ready because of a blasted cold that I'm at least in the recovery stages of but I'm still on treatment with it. Mostly, though, I'm just showing off the Nobilia market stuff, trudging back through the Desert of Doom, and at the start having fun with the guard at the south end of the Nobilia Square, as well as the prophet.
I do make some statements. For starters, I can point out what I realized a decade and a half ago: that intelligence is a dark power especially when manipulation and charm get involved to the point where tropes like Break Her Heart To Save Her become paradoxal. At least a dark power isn't innately evil, and its user chooses whether to use it for good or ill. It just sucks that I suffer for caring about that much.
The return trip through the Desert of Doom--for reference, port side of the boat to handle the basic route if you don't want to skip it with the boat ride--is a showcase of the shortcomings of having an AI partner at all. The good news is that the Ruby Heart cuts enemy Hit significantly, but the bad news is that I'm having to be mindful of the Sand Spiders basically trying to feed Private Hazard some chocolate and the Desert of Doom's gradual damage working on him as well. I should talk about in the next part, but I do get to bring up why the Dog's Charged Attacks worked so efficiently against Raptors. I also talked about the case of The Dev Team Thinks Of Everything with the skeleton boatman, even if I am wary about the precise details because they're not for kids' ears.
Also, Desert of Doom enemies can drop Water. You can explain this as Tumbleweeds, which have a higher drop chance than standard, potentially collecting the water that cacti store for survival if we don't go by the oases showing the desert to be primarily Sahara-themed instead of Wild West-themed. Actual Fridge Brilliance, more than what can be said for the tree roots in a volcano.
