Secret of Evermore - Self-Imposed Challenge Run Part 19: The music of the Greeks
Rules so far:
-No switching to the Dog in an active combat area unless absolutely necessary
-Dog must not be dropped to 0 HPs
-Pixie Dust, Wings, and Call Beads are not allowed
-Alchemy restrictions to be determined
-Bone Crusher banned after Thraxx; all other Swords banned
-Horn Spear only allowed for a case of That One Boss or for demonstration purposes; all other Spears banned other than Bronze Spear
-Jade Disc, Moxa Stick, Armor Polish, Chocobo Egg, and Spiky Collar banned for Antiqua
-Most rules disabled for convenience in non-threatening areas
Rule changes:
-Spear restrictions - long range attacking is needed for a case of That One Boss. Horn Spear is the weakest Spear, of course. Otherwise, I can pretty much work with using Axes any other time. The Bronze Spear (obtained in this part) is only made an exception for hitting certain distant switches that the Horn Spear doesn't work on.
I also grinded Sting off-screen, despite still officially banning it. Trust me: what I'll do with it is going to be strictly for demonstration purposes. This actually hinders me by reducing my money by nearly the amount needed for 140 castings of Sting.
Mini-Taur fight at 38:35 and Megataur fight at 1:06:09. Halls of Collosia music awesomeness starts at 17:07. Even though it was loud.
Halls of Collosia has a solid primary song, and the 2 renditions that play throughout the later chambers are, while not stand-outs, actually fitting of the atmosphere. Jeremy Soule deserves praise for his work, really.
Of course, the place in general is easy, despite the Dancin' Fools proving to be obnoxious as far as mooks go. Lime Slimes and their region early palette swaps Blue Goos rely purely on the player randomly failing the hit roll to be a remote threat, and Rats have literally no initiative about attacking you. The bosses, while a step above the Great Pyramid's Rimsala, still aren't incredible threats. Mini-Taur tries with how he has ridiculous chasing ability, but is too susceptible to burst damage to be a big threat. Megataur just really does little more than catch you not paying attention to HP while having actually decent durability, but he's laughably susceptible to hit-and-run attacks and doesn't have the sort of protection that Rimsala had. Megataur's room doesn't even have any incentive to look around it and consequently weather his alchemy attacks that are just plain too weak to be a real threat.
I think I'd want to go into comment about the handling of gameplay and story. Comment(s) to be made at some point in the future.
