Shrak for Quake w/ 3D spatial sound in FTE 🎧 (OpenAL Soft HRTF audio)
USE HEADPHONES ONLY with any virtual surround like Windows Sonic turned off. Best HRTF effects at 1:44, 2:16, and 2:29.
This is Shrak, a commercial Total Conversion for Quake 1, with OpenAL Soft's HRTF [IRC_1037 tables] in FTE. I discovered this mod through MarphitimusBlackimus' "Obscure First-Person Shooters" series nearly a decade ago and was delighted to see a free patched version on ModDb. Shrak stands out among the other Quake add-ons for having a completely original assortment of monsters and weapons (minus the Super Shotgun). It also has a couple of gimmicky tools like a grappling hook and flares that you'll never use. The new weapons aren't quite as useless as X-Men Quake's, but they're still clearly downgrades from the original Quake's arsenal. The enemies, on the other hand, can be extremely cheap. The scorpions fire Shambler lightning without warning, while the large, armored mutants fire rockets and grenades incredibly fast. The worst of the bunch are definitely the flying eyeballs that leave behind electrified gibs that hurt you.
The biggest shame of Shrak is that it's just not that interesting, even with the funny enemy models and awful sound design. The 11 levels are short and forgettable, with no real themes besides generic dungeons and techbases. The most interesting setpiece is a submarine in "The Shipyard" that houses a gold key and requires a crane to escape. The soundtrack is also really bland, with one track that loops the same note over and over. If Shrak was a free mod in 1997, it would've been average for the time. Since this thing cost the equivalent of $31.93 in today's money, however, it's just unacceptable. The most interesting thing about Shrak is that two of the level designers, Chris Carollo and Michael Wardwell, went professional and are most recently credited on Artifact and Borderlands 3 respectively.
