It's been 20 years since the release of Deus Ex, the all-time classic FPS RPG. What better way to celebrate than with playing with Deus Ex's most underappreciated mod, the ALAudio patch? This mod lets you play the game with full 3D positional audio on headphones or up to 7.0 surround with EAX reverb and audio occlusion. It's essentially emulating what Aureal A3D soundcards would've sounded like at the time. Aside from that, I'm using Kentie's Deus Ex launcher, the Direct3D 10 renderer, and the old version maps.
The 3D positional audio is quite good in this game, but not perfect. I can't imagine Aureal A3D would've sounded that much better. You really get a nice sense of ambience with all the characteristic Unreal Engine 1 sound emitters placed in the urban environments. The ALAudio patch does have some drawbacks, though. Lip syncing is a bit off compared to GalaxyAudio. Some looping sounds have noticable clicking, as heard in the 7:19 timestamp. You also can't use a newer version of OpenAL Soft, or else you will break lip syncing altogether. That means if you want to use a custom HRTF preset (IRC_1037 heard in footage), you'll need to download an older batch of HRTF presets linked below.
