This is HROT, an upcoming indie throwback FPS by Spytihněv with a Cold War Eastern Bloc theme. Unlike other games like DUSK, ULTRAKILL, and Hell Hunt which use modern engines like Unity, HROT is the real deal. It uses a custom-built engine written in Pascal with unfiltered textures and wobbly IDTech 2-style models. Out of all the '90s throwback FPS games released so far, HROT is shaping up to be my absolute favorite. It perfectly captures the feeling of a game released in 1997 or 1998 from the graphics and artstyle to the gameplay. No jank, no obnoxious pixellated textures, no misleading game comparisons, no cancerous memes or Youtuber cameos -- HROT really is the game that Action Forms could've made, but never did.
Elevating HROT even further is the inclusion of OpenAL as its audio API (64-bit .DLLs). While the decision was most likely made to allow for an open-source release down the line, the five of us 3D audio enthusiasts out there get to benefit from some really nice binaural audio effects. Unfortunately, HROT wasn't made with 3D positional audio in mind. Quite a few .WAVs like the running water and moving lifts are stereo samples, making them play at full volume regardless of position. I can only hope the developer becomes informed of this and fixes it up for the final release, along with maybe some simple EFX reverb for underwater effects like FTE Quake and GZDoom.
Also, what's up with the gunshot sounds? Are they WIPs or what? They sound like high-pass filter layers, especially the shotgun and SMG.
