While it was marketed as another game in the series, it's origins as the second half of Sonic 3 couldn't be more apparent than the fact the game allowed you to physically connect your Sonic 3 cartridge to Sonic & Knuckles, and play the two games one after the other. While technical limitations might have forced the game to be two cartridges, playing Sonic & Knuckles on it's own is quite an interesting process, since the difficulty ramps up much quicker, and the levels are still massively sprawling. I still think the Sonic & Knuckles soundtrack is still my favourite of the series, Flying Battery being some of my favourite video game music ever.
