Tails: Way Past Fast

Classic Sonic gets Classic Tails, and Modern Sonic gets Modern Tails. Tails knows he can never beat Sonic on foot, but I had the impression Tails would take shortcuts in the air. In a way, he does--just not using his tails. Instead, he's piloting the Tornado (whichever version it is).
Sonic travels along a highly modified last half of the main stage as Tails flies the plant in the background. For some reason, Tails doesn't just make a beeline to the end, considering there is nothing in his way, but instead flies loops. After that circle, I just lose sight of Tails altogether.
Tails doesn't affect this stage in any way whatsever, so it's pretty much just getting to the finish as soon as possible.
