Vector: Through the Storm

Vector has become pretty popular, hasn't he? I mean, he got promoted to playable in Sonic Free Riders as of late, and in a rare instance among the Sonic fandom, no one complained about that. Espio and Charmy, not so popular. And definitely not Mighty. And definitely and certainly not Heavy and Bomb. (Well, Mighty does have a small and fairly vocal faction hoping for his reappearance.)

In Big's absence, Vector is the strong man among the Sonic characters, more so than Knuckles. Look at his size! However, Vector's also pretty bright, which I'd bet is part of why he took off in popularity: In Sonic Heroes, he was the first to figure out the Dr. Eggman they were fighting as bosses was not he real one, and that this impostor imprisoned the actual Dr. Eggman. But I suppose we should back up a bit, since not all of you are too familiar with this guy.

Vector the Crocodile first appeared on a soundtrack album for Sonic 1, which means he precedes even Tails as a Sonic character. Someone must have liked his design, since he then showed up as one of the playable charcaters in Knuckles' Chaotix. He is the biggest character and is somewhere in the middle in speed but has the lowest jump. However, he can dash in midair and scale walls like Knuckles can. For a long while, he and the other Chaotix were largely forgotten except in the comics (which has its separate canon).

Vector returned in Sonic Heroes as the head of the Chaotix Detective Agency. After Knuckles's Newtrogic High amusement park shut down, he decided to be a private investigator, bringing Espio the Chameleon and Charmy Bee along. The agency is not as successful as Vector had hoped, but he gets an anonymous series of requests where the client promises to "pay handsomely." Hoping for this to be his big break, Vector takes Espio and Charmy along...only to discover that Eggman, too, has run out of money but will pay the Chaotix once he takes over the world.

People liked Team Chaotix, so the three of them returned in Shadow the Hedgehog. Vector shows up to assist Shadow directly in Cosmic Fall with the "Find the computer room" line, which has become a meme among Sonic fans and likely the other major reason for Vector's popularity.

Vector's next major role is in Sonic Free Riders. Still as broke as ever, Vector (without Espio and Charmy) gets pulled in by Amy and Cream to be part of a team of Extreme Gear racers under the promise that he gets his share of the prize money. Amy plays upon Vector's desperation and bosses him around. Ultimately, they place last, and Vector retires from Extreme Gear.

He has also shown up in minor roles elsewhere, usually with Espio and Charmy. Whenever the story needs a detective, Vector is there. For instance, in Sonic Colors DS, the agency is on Planet Wisp to see if Eggman is up to no good (which is likely why Charmy is assigned to Planet Wisp in this game). They figure out Eggman's plot but aren't able to do anything about it.

In this mission, Vector tosses Classic Sonic around. Wherever you see a blue exclamation point marker, that means you need Vector's help over there. Later on, you'll find lines of Rings or enemies; these serve the same purpose. Vector will always face in the same direction as Sonic when you call him over. If it turns out he's facing the wrong way, press B (or O on the PS3) to cancel it and face the correct way.

This mission takes Classic Sonic through the last third of the main stage and actually has a bunch of branching paths--the difference is that you're on the top path by default, and you fall down to paths below if you make a mistake. I messed up near the end here, but Sonic wasn't slowed down enough to not get the S-Rank.

The music in this stage, by the way, is a remix of "Balloon Park" from Sonic 3. Balloon Park was a multiplayer-only stage, so it's not as famous as the likes of Angel Island or Ice Cap.
