Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis (GBA) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
346A playthrough of Sega's 2006 platformer for the Game Boy Advance, Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis.
Played through in Anniversary mode which allows the Spin Dash to be used. The two available modes are otherwise identical.
This GBA port of the 16-bit classic was one of two games on offer from Sega to celebrate the blue mascot's 15th birthday. It must have been disappointing for our turbocharged friend to have been there - all your friends show up excited, but leave, thoroughly pissed, not even five minutes later.
That's about the kind of party Sega gave Sonic. The PS3 and 360 game, Sonic the Hedgehog (or more commonly referred to as Sonic 2006) was critically panned, and with good reason. It was bad.
Hopes were high for it, just like they were for this GBA release. This one you might expect would be better - it's Sonic's awesome first game, just in portable form. Right?
Well, no. It's not. Still shots and hype writing make it seem that way, but everything that could go wrong did.
If the loading before the first area starts didn't foreshadow the problems enough, you'll soon notice how the music took a huge hit - some of it's been done with about the cheapest sounding, inappropriately chosen samples imaginable (though a couple do survive the transition somewhat intact), the physics are way off, and it often slows to a fraction of the speed of the original for no apparent reason. Oddly enough, all of these problems make the game much easier, but you probably won't enjoy it for very long. The issues really start compounding one another in the later stages.
Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis is a complete travesty and pretty cruel joke. Maybe they should've waited till his 16th birthday to release it so that it might have had a chance at being fixed.
