J.J. and Jeff (TG16) Playthrough - NintendoComplete
A playthrough of Hudson's 1990 platformer for the TurboGrafx-16, J.J. and Jeff.
This is another Hudson platform that I think is absolutely fantastic. It seems to get dismissed a lot, and I think that is probably because it doesn''t play around. It's extremely hard, very much in the old school way. It's extremely similar to the original Adventure Island/Wonderboy game in the way it feels familiar with Mr. Higgins' first adventure, except now it veers even closer to Mario in comparison with the hop and bop move added. It's VERY touchy with the hit detection though: if you don't hit the dead-center of your target, it's gonna hurt. Once you get used to it, it's no problem, but it's not forgiving at all. It took me forever to get through- I can't tell you how irritating it would get to accidentally land on a green springboard and warped a level backwards. Of course, the inclusion of such a thing is good here, since you can't get to the boss without a key, and if you missed it in the prior section, you can warp back and not be forced to restart the whole game.
It got pretty hammered for all of the censorship from the Japanese original, but I actually like this one better. the original was based on a Japanese variety show starring two famous Japanese comedians and lots of toilet humor, but the changes in the US gane just make it all the more bizarre and funny. JJ & Jeff beautifully illustrate the hilarity of visual nonsequiturs.
Anyways, if you really like insanely hard platformers (that aren't hard because they're unfair, just super demanding), this is a great choice. If you find finishing Super Mario Bros. a difficult task, steer well away from this. It will make you cry.
