84The opening and first stage of Space Channel 5, a music game by United Game Artists (developers better known for the instant classic Rez).
This is one of those Simon Says style music games. Remember Parappa The Rapper? Same kind of thing, and like Parappa, it'll win you over thanks to it's awesome presentation. Seriously, ten years later and I find it hard to fault the visual style that was chosen by the Sega developers with Space Channel 5. The story follows Ulala, the groovy new reporter of the Channel 5 News Network team as she investigates a curious invasion of a dancing alien race known as Morolians. It is dumb as, which probably also explains why Micheal Jackson makes his bizarre cameo towards the end of the game.
Yet Space Channel 5 is an experience that should be had, don't get me wrong, and it proves to be addictive to comeback and beat your previous score too. Like Rez, it can be completed in a short span of five levels but it is one of those games that has to be played. In the UK Space Channel 5 is exceedingly rare, often going for £10 plus in price pre-owned. If you live state-side it is possible to find the Space Channel 5 Special Edition new for $15 on places like Amazon, it includes both the original Space Channel 5 and Space Channel 5 Part 2.
