Spear of Destiny First Full Playthrough (via ECWolf)
Having recently played through Wolfenstein 3D E1-3, I'm jumping straight to what I've really had in the back of my mind to revisit for many years: Spear of Destiny, the 20-map expansion.
I seem to have various memories from watching my dad play through most of this in the 90s (especially with regard to music and textures), but I'm not sure he ever managed to survive the final boss, so I had been curious to revisit it myself in more recent years.
The addition of new textures makes this feel quite a bit more varied than Wolfenstein 3D, and the level design seems to step things up a notch at least relative to E1-E3. (I haven't played E4-E6 recently to confirm but I seem to recall it having some truly ridiculous level design that belongs in its own league...)
I was quite impressed by the environmental storytelling in the final 2 levels in particular... but the 2nd-to-last level also turns out to be maybe the most unreasonable level in the game. (Meanwhile, I managed to lock myself out of 100% kills in the second secret level.)
The endgame twist definitely stands out to me as the game's most memorable moment, and probably the best one out of all of the games I've played on this engine.
