Released 11/21/1985, Pac-Land for Famicom is a port of Namco's 1984 arcade side-scrolling platformer. You play as Pac-Man trying to release fairies back in to fairyworld. While not as faithful as some other Namco ports, it gets the gist of the original. This game would never make it to the U.S. on the NES, but it did see an extremely faithful port on the TurboGrafx-16 system in 1990. The background also inspired a stage in Super Smash Bros. for WiiU and Switch.

The original arcade version was based on the Pac-Man animated series, so this is among the few games with cartoon IP in the early Famicom library: Popeye, Kinnukiman, Macross, etc. Its controls took inspiration from Konami's Track & Field where players can use buttons to run and to jump. In this port, you can play with the modified arcade scheme where the joystick or D-pad functions as the jump button, or you can use a traditional control scheme using the player-two controller. I am not a big fan of Pac-Land--it's too clunky--but I appreciate its influence on Super Mario Bros. and other early side-scrolling platformers like Alex Kidd.

I am considering a playthrough to be beating the Hi Score. I played on an original NES with a Game Genie adapter (see Shorts) to allow for playing a Famicom cartridge. I am using a NES Advantage controller, RCA cables, and a Sharp X-Flat 27" CRT TV.
