Star Fox on the SNES is back again with its sequel...or at least that's what Nintendo initially planned. This formerly unknown game in the series is called Star Fox 2, and this title has never been physically released on the original Super NES system, because it was cancelled just before it could come out in 1996. Unlike many other lost games, however, it was actually ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜๐—ฒ by the time the plug was pulled. Star Fox 2 never saw the light of day to the public until over two decades later in 2017, when Nintendo finally changed their minds and let the ROM itself be officially released to the SNES Classic mini-console in emulator form. A huge surprise indeed to the older fans and even the original developers such as Dylan Cuthbert (the lead programmer of this and the first game) who waited for so long when it was originally announced way back in the '90s.

The original story of why Star Fox 2 was cancelled was by late 1995, although it used an updated version of the Super FX chip called "Super FX 2", which runs at 21 MHz and is technically speaking the Super NES at ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿฌ% power, the PS1 and Sega Saturn were already out and outperformed it in 3D capabilities plus the Nintendo 64 was on its way. In addition, it definitely would've been quite expensive had it actually been released. At this point, it became clear the Super Nintendo was starting to become obsolete. Nintendo prioritized the N64 and we got Star Fox 64 instead to replace it in '97. It was dropped when it was 95% complete, but thankfully, because it was so close to being done, rather than wasting it entirely, Nintendo still finished the game in closed doors after cancellation, and that is why we COULD play it in its final version nowadays! In my opinion, however, although I understand the reason, and I certainly played Star Fox 64, I still think Nintendo should've let Star Fox 2 be out in the real SNES back then, because this game is actually a GEM and is arguably the most important title of the franchise, as it indeed inspired not only Star Fox 64 but Command and Zero as well, as some of their ideas like Star Wolf, Walkers, and so on came from this game! What I love most about this game however, is this is the only Star Fox game where ANY member of the Star Fox Team other than Fox can directly fight Andross, even Slippy and my boy Falco.

As for the game itself, taking place just after the first, it turns out that Andross has survived the original battle, and wants revenge for doing a second full-on attack across the Lylat System. However, things are different, as it is no longer an on-rails style game but now a semi-real strategy one. Interestingly, there are 6 members in the Star Fox Team, with two new unique characters (for some reason Nintendo never returned at all), named Miyu and May, who themselves are precursors of Katt and Bill. I am playing the game in all three difficulties and surprisingly, cheats do exist, and so I used them to make the Homing shots automatically available. Oh, and Smart Bombs are your best friend in Expert, too.

Normal (Peppy, Slippy): 0:00-25:33
Hard (Miyu, May): 25:34-1:04:40
Expert (Falco, Fox): 1:04:41-1:54:53

Fun fact: Yoshi's Island actually uses the Super FX 2 chip as well, meaning that although it was a platformer only using it for 2D effects, it technically has the power to do the awesome 16-bit graphics seen in Star Fox 2. 3D polygons do exist in that game, however, but were minimally used.
