Yars' Revenge (Atari 2600)
0Yars' Revenge. What a name. This hit Atari 2600 game from 1982 is a space shooter of yourself taking control of the Yars and destroying the wicked Qotile enemy, by using the Zorlon Cannon after wrecking its shield barrier. Care must be taken as the Qotile can periodically turn into a Swirl to attack you and a continuously pursing missile is also on your tail. The cannon itself is also dangerous if you're not careful. I am playing the game on its highest difficulty called "Ultimate Yars" with the switch on "A", making it a fun challenge. Despite the video recording suggest otherwise as it cannot catch the flickers well from its slower frame rate and make certain things appear missing, it was perfectly fine when I was actually playing.
There is a high score feature that when you reach a certain amount of score, the difficulty increases drastically. For example, as seen in the video, when you reach 70,000 points the shield turns blue and the Swirl occurs 3x in frequency. Then, when you reach 150,000 (which I rarely could reach), it becomes gray and the Swirl returns to normal but follows you around as it fires. And, if 230,000 is reached (very few ever get this), both features are added as it turns pink, making it extremely difficult to survive.
