Almost 1,300 members of the armed forces have taken part in the State Opening of Parliament in London.

The Queen travelled from Buckingham Palace to perform the duty, escorted by the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

The Queen's Speech confirmed Government plans to increase the size and role of Army reservists and to privatise the way defence equipment is bought. She outlined the Governments commitment to fighting terror and achieving peace in Afghanistan, and said the Government would protect the rights of Falkland islanders and the residents of Gibraltar.
