132Golgo 13: Top Secret Episode was a game released for the NES in 1988.
Developed by Vic Tokai, Top Secret Episode is one of two Golgo 13 games released in Japan for the Famicom. Golgo 13 was originally a Japanese Manga in the late 60's that was adapted to Anime TV series, full length movies and even a live action movie in the 70's and 80's. Top Secret Episode was one of the 1st of five original Golgo 13 video games, two being for the Famicom and three for the Japanese arcades. The second Famicom game (Golgo 13 Episode 2: The Riddle of Icarus) was also released in North America as The Mafat Conspiracy in 1990.
The game was one of the first Nintendo games to feature Sexual suggestions and graphic violence (blood when enemies are shot can be seen in the 3D maze and sniper levels) although the game was censored from the original Japanese release. The original famicom version's Hotel scene can be altered so that Cherry will remove her dress leaving her only in panties for a few seconds. There are also Nazi references in the original Japanese version that have been removed form the North American NES version. This game (and I assume the Japanse Manga it's based) is clearly designed for an older audience.
Anyway this was a pretty unique game on the NES for the time. It was released before the big Manga/Anime boom in North America (Although this is around the time the TMNT series started to help jump start the craze, other key shows as Sailor Moon and DBZ hadn't come along yet) and the fact is most people in North America at the time didn't know what Japanese Animation was all about. No surprise this game didn't sell so well. No one over here knew what Golgo 13 was despite the fact it was so popular in Japan for decades prior. It was a game geared towards an older audience and based on an unknown Japanese series. Good luck selling that to the young crowd who was buying up all the NES games in the late 80's! Point is the game was never sought after. There are a lot of copies in the wild and it can usually be found really cheaply. So pick it up!
