Splatterhouse 3 was released in Japan and North America in March of 1993. Like Splatterhouse 2 it was an exclusive to the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive and not based on an Arcade game. Splatterhouse 3 (like Splatterhouse 2) was published by Namco but developed by Now Production. Unlike Splatterhouse 2 however, Splatterhouse 3 was not released in Europe for the PAL Mega Drive.

While the graphic design, story, characters and music are similar to the previous Splatterhouse games, Splatterhouse 3 takes a big turn in the gameplay department. Enemies are now confined in rooms and while they don't keep coming at you in waves they do take much more hits to kill. When all enemies are killed in a room you "clear" the room allowing you to leave and progress to the next room. Level design is not linear like the previous games as you can now explore the various rooms in the mansion as you wish This gives you multiple paths as many rooms aren't required to beat a level. Getting to the Boss before the time limit runs out will allow you to save your girlfriend and/or son to achieve a better ending to the game. Also added to Splatterhouse 3 is a Power Up meter that can be filled by collecting orbs throughout the levels. When you have any power saved in the power up meter you can change Rick into a beast giving him more attack power.

Despite the huge changes to the gameplay Splatterhouse 3 still delivers everything you've come to expect. Creepy music, mutated and rotting enemies, various weapons and lots of gore! It's like playing your favorite 80's horror flick! Unfortunately Splatterhouse 3 is a little harder to find than Splatterhouse 2 but it's well worth tracking down if you're a fan of the series. Like Splatterhouse 2 this is a game that was designed for the Sega Genesis, not based on an Arcade game and remained exclusive. So it's another must have title for any Sega Genesis/Mega Drive collector too!
