#SuperOldGameSaturday - Streets of Rage 2 (Sega Genesis) & Bare Knuckle II (Sega Mega Drive)
Originally Recorded/Aired On November 12th, 2022
After playing Final Fight 2 earlier this year on #SuperOldGameSaturday, we're back to Sega's 1990s beat-em-up franchise with perhaps the best entry in it; Streets of Rage 2. After the first game, Mr. X and the Syndicate are back and kidnapped Adam Hunter, so it's up tp Axel Stone, Blaze Fielding, Max Thunder and Adam's kid brother, Eddie "Skate", to save the city and Adam. This masterpiece came out 30 years ago next year and, though I intended to use the original Sega Genesis cartridge for this one, technical problems with my copy meant I had to pick one of the 8 other versions of this that I own, to which, I settled on the Sega Genesis Mini port that also let me show off the Japanese version, Bare Knuckle II. So, myself and an active chat played through both the English and Japanese editions, showing off every unique aspect of them, enjoying the masterful music of Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima and having great conversations about this game, the franchise, the conventions of beat-em-ups, the multitude of different versions of this, the games that we own the most versions of via ports and collections, our emotional reactions to losses from this past week (some personal and some famous, the latter including Gallagher, Keith Levene and Kevin Conroy) and much more. As I mentioned, all of this was possible because of the chat who came by to watch this, including Cazim22, ElecVerse, DollyFinn and an appearance by Nocturne (she'll be back on the show in 4 weeks,by the way) whose support and insights ,made for yet another terrific and unique look at a classic game that also inspired some great edits in this upload version of our play of this one. Next time we come back to this franchise, it'll be with Emetics for Streets of Rage 3 and, on ElecVerse's inspiration, we're bouncing back and forth between this and the Final Fight series of Capcom's with its next entry, Final Fight 3, in 5 weeks, but until then and until our next show, hope you enjoy of our play of Streets of Rage 2 and its Japanese counterpart, Bare Knuckle II (and if you like what you see here, stop by https://www.twitch.tv/captainditrag each Saturday at 7 PM EST to see these streams live and join the conversations on what we play each week)!
