#SuperOldGameSaturday - Tetris Attack (Super Nintendo & Game Boy)

We've been covering 1990s puzzle games over the past few months here on #SuperOldGameSaturday, many of which showed a lack of skill on my part, but not with this one, for which I was also joined by DollyFinn who also adores this game. This is Tetris Attack for the Super Nintendo, which we've been playing since its release in 1996, though we also took a brief look at the Game Boy version (which we both only first played recently) in this first showcase of Nintendo and Intelligent Systems' puzzle game series that began with 1995's Panel De Pon on Super Famicom. Yes, despite its name, this isn't technically connected to Tetris, and it was localized for the US in this way to add Yoshi and other characters from Yoshi's Island, but with its potent mix of easy to learn, but incredibly in-depth gameplay, terrific visuals and audio, multiple modes and one of the best multiplayer modes in the genre, this may well be a better game than Tetris itself, which is perhaps the best praise we can possibly give it. For this play, we looked at every mode in both the portable and console versions (including all the tutorials and the Endless, Stage Clear, Vs, Time Attack and Puzzle modes, the latter of which we plan to dedicate a future show to solve its 120 puzzles) and also played the multiplayer as DollyFinn, I and the chat went into all our memories of this terrific puzzle game, why it means so much to us and went deep on multiple other topics, like classic arcade games/compilations, remakes of some of those said arcade titles, differences between the Japanese and English versions of this game (and other games in this series and inspired by it), discussions on Yoshi and the Yoshi's Island series, this difficulty of this and other games of Intelligent Systems (specifically, Fire Emblem), old Nickelodeon TV shows, game shows and much more.
