Maxwell is just a punching bag. He has a lot of HP but barely any defenses, his hurtbox is very big, he can't air recover (as opposed to his Xillia 1 version) and his knockdown timer is above average. The old man even has a weak point, himself, so you can outright ignore his Iron Stance by hitting him directly.
Doing a diagonal jump right at the start ensures the second hit of Tiger Blade hits the weak point if Maxwell approaches, and while that's already a knockdown, it doesn't matter at all as his OTG Limit can be bypassed by hitting the weak point again.
Either way, Maxwell always starts the fight in his Fire form, which means he's x2 weak to Water. Since Gaius preferred weapon is either Dark or Water to hit that extra multiplier, that works perfectly to maximize my damage output.
Something to keep in mind is that Maxwell acts frame 1 and one of his available actions include Overlimit, which can be quite annoying because he'll usually retreat to cast Sunburst instead of attacking at close range. It's a waste of time really, and there are a couple of bosses left that have this quirk as well.
