That Leo stage is Super Hard! DLC Stages x1-4 | R-Type Final 2 (2021-06-04)
The second pair of DLC stages for R-Type Final 2 have arrived - the first stage of R-Type Delta (Crazy Machine) and the [third?] stage of the original R-Type (Warship Out Of Hell). However, since these are part of the Homage Stages campaign, I can't simply go straight to them. I need to go back through that campaign and beat the first two stages.
So, off I go to actually learn how to play the R-Type III and Leo stages properly. While I haven't figured out how to properly dodge the fire in Stage X1.0, I did figure out that they're surprisingly easy to destroy with the right weapon. My favorite ship R-9WB Happy Days turns out to be an excellent choice since the split wave cannon pretty easily one-shots the furnaces and deals a ton of damage to both bosses for that stage. Despite starting out with Leo 2 for Stage X2.0, it turns out that Happy Days also works very well for that stage, especially on the boss where it not only can damage the boss when the shell is closed, but deals an enormous amount of damage to larger targets.
Stage X3.0 (from Delta) certainly looks pretty cool, but I think it's missing some of the grit from the original version, and the music is surprisingly subdued. Also, that Gains w/the laser at the beginning has an awful firing sound. The miniboss and boss on the other hand are the highlights as they've been given a bit of an upgrade (with the boss having a surprise at the end). Also, I want to note that apparently I was wrong, the directed thrust/lasers from the back of the boss aren't actually much different in speed than the original game.
Stage X4.0 on the other hand, while I don't remember it much from the original game, it certainly looks great here, and the differing backgrounds look awesome. One thing I did notice is that as you destroy parts of the warship, more of it looks like ribs and organic components, which isn't as apparent in the original version outside of the eyeball weak spot (which incidentally isn't present here). Once you master the level, it tends to go quick, and I think it might be the best spot for farming resources, especially Etherium.
Overall these stages are really good, and I'm hoping they're well regarded by players since I'd like to see more stuff like it. There's a third set of stages (possibly three this time?) planned for some point in the future, alongside probably at least a few more ships.
