Jerp plays Subnautica: Below Zero pt.10 - Final Approach, Closure, & What Lies Beyond...(2021-05-29)
Today's session was the longest yet - Subnautica continues to be ridiculously addictive.
I start to realize here that I've probably already been to Omega Lab and make plans to head back and have another look. There's also the task from Marguerit to take out the radar/transmitter tower. Before I can do any of that, I need to get the Seatruck back out to open water, and it's a long, cumbersome train right now.
Once the tower's out, I find myself heading to Marguerit's land abode (though not before confirming that yeah, I did go to Omega Lab and searching for it again was a waste of time). Marguerit's got quite the nice greenhhouse and I was able to pick up a bunch of blueprints & plantable crops -- plus I get to learn that her pet Stalker's name is Preston. Looking back, I really wish I had come here sooner - it seems I did everything way out of order and greatly extended my stay on 4546B.
I finally discovered Outpost Zero, which incidentally probably should've been one of the first areas I reached - tons of useful blueprints! I think it also would have made the story a bit more coherent if I had read the logs there early on.
Later on, I spent a ton of time on land and eventually ended up at the Phi Excavation Site where I discover Sam's fate and the Frozen Leviathan - with the first sign of Kharaa. After getting better settled into the area I located the cure that Sam had synthesized and hopefully put an end to Alterra's potential catastrophic mistake, at least for now (considering Natural Selection is in the same universe, perhaps it still escaped 4546B, or another strain still exists on another planet). Strange how the cure is so simple to make this time around. I guess it's better than the scavenger hunt from the first game.
The remaining task as far as I could tell was to scour and find the remaining data for Alan's body. Eventually I stumble upon a mining site where an Architect had been crushed in accident in a mine used for harvest Large Emeralds for Ion Cube/etc. manufacture. The corpse's tissue ended up being the final component required. After gathering the requisite materials, I headed back to the Red Crystal Caves and construction began (though not before my poor sense of direction once again tried to get the best of me).
After having a meeting with a fully corporeal Alan, I met him at the gate to leave the planet and headed in.
Overall I had a lot of fun with the game. I think I miss the sense of dread as you got so incredibly deep past the Lost River + how ridiculously cool the Cyclops was in the first game, but Below Zero had some cool stuff as well - the land sections were pretty well done, and the more fleshed out story was well done. Aside from the differences, the most addictive part for me is the same in either game - the wonder and exploration as you simply get lost in the world, try to survive, and try to get settled w/bases & whatnot. I hope Unknown Worlds is still interested in making more games in the series, as I'm totally down for more.
