Soon after the meeting between Five Families and nominal end of their war, Michael Corleone returns from Sicily and takes over active operations of the Corleones, now effectively becoming Vito's appointed heir due to Sonny being dead and Fredo having been sent to Las Vegas several years earlier, while Vito himself effectively retires to live out his remaining days in peace. Due to that, Aldo is sent to report to him in Corleone compound where he is officially promoted into an Caporegime, becoming an part of Michael's inner circle. He is also given an assignment; With FBI monitoring Corleones, Aldo is to join Monk in finding out what is happening. However, as he meets Monk in front of an hotel in Little Italy, Aldo is told that someone from the family has turned into an federal informant with Aldo and Monk attacking an Barzini-held establishment in order to find the alleged traitor. However, once they do, the man, sitting in front of an large board, claims that him and Monk had a deal before Monk executes him. Just then, another Corleone enforcer named Jimmy comes up with Monk storming out. As he does, Jimmy asks Aldo which one of them had killed the man, revealing that the alleged informant was in fact the FBI agent to whom Monk was supposed to report. Tony also reveals that Michael had suspected that either Monk or Aldo were providing evidence about Corleones' activities to the FBI, but that Monk's murder of the agent had definitely outed him as the informant desperate to cover his tracks as he was aware that the new Don has caught onto his treachery, with Aldo observing the board behind the dead agent and noticing that it lists all key people of Corleone Crime Family, including him while Tony uses the phone in the room to call Michael and notify him about the development. After Michael requests to talk to Aldo, he gives him an new directive; Kill Monk, an task which Aldo will have to accomplish despite having been friends with Monk for years and having even dated his sister prior to her death. Regardless, Aldo sets out and tracks Monk down to Cuneo-owned nightclub with their verbal confrontation revealing Monk's motivation for betraying Corleones; Aware that he will never be more than an associate in the organization due to his mixed Irish-Italian heritage, Monk felt resentment towards Aldo, whose full Italian descent made him eligible to advance further in the ranks, with Frankie's death, for which he also blames Aldo, having pushed him over the edge as he believed that without any remaining family and working for an organization where he was effectively stuck in an dead end, he had nothing to lose by resorting to betrayal. Despite Monk retreating deeper into the club and being protected by the present Cuneo mobsters, Aldo is able to kill everyone present, including Monk himself...
