The House of the Dead - Sega Saturn - Intro & Arcade mode playthrough [UHD 4K 60fps]
Full gameplay longplay / playthrough / walkthrough / trueplay of the Sega Saturn port of the AM1 arcade classic House of the Dead, just a shame the Saturn port is pretty dire. AM1 couldn't be bothered to port House of the Dead themselves so instead farmed it out to Tantalus Media who duly murdered the port in every aspect.
While the port was done in a matter of months, Tantalus weren't a top tier developer and House of the Dead ended up as one of the worse looking games on Sega Saturn. With extreme low texture and what looks like unfinished character models, but they were in fact finished along with missing animation and models. Topped off with plenty of mid level loading and a somewhat hit and miss frame rate that falls apart in The Magician battle. Added to this some background creatures are also missing from the home port and some enemies are also the incorrect colour. On the plus side the core arcade gameplay is fully in place and you can still have some fun with this version, even if it is far from perfect. AM2's port of Virtua Cop, shows just how bad the Saturn version of House of the Dead was and also how good it could have been if the right team had ported it. To date this remains the only home version with the PC version also running on the Saturn code.
That's enough on how bad the Saturn version is as the arcade itself was a brilliant light gun shooter that had you blasting your way through the creatures of Dr Curien. Unlike other light gun shooters at the time the game featured different routes through the mansion. Saving hostages awarded extra lives and bonus points and if you could save all of them in one run you got to visit a secret bonus room. The game also featured three different ending with the best one awarded for scoring over 62,000 points and you really need to save all the hostages, if you want to do that. Sadly we won't be doing that with the joypad on Saturn.
This is captured from the NTSC/J (Japan original print run) version of the game, only minor changes is the blood code was removed in the Japanese release. The PAL version also suffers from a rather nasty issue of the boss mode timer jumping from 49 sec to 1 minute. The cursor for the game runs at 60fps, which is just about the only thing that does, the rest is lucky to keep pace at even 30fps.
