This is such an important subject in non dual self-inquiry. It is the heart of the matter. And it is why nonduality is not theoretical or theological but supremely practice.

Who we believe ourselves to be determines the entire quality and quantity of our lives. The sense of identity is the one thing that influences everything else. What is the true I Am and what is merely a projection of our minds? That is the most important question to answer.

As the Buddha put it in his first Bodhisattva practice "Becoming adept at distinguishing the projections of our own minds."
