Video Game Easter Eggs: Mike Tyson's Punch Out Famicom Edition
With Easter right around the corner, it seemed appropriate to discuss one of the most interesting Video Game Easter Eggs we've ever heard of. See, in the original Mike Tyson's Punch Out, the developer used the pass key system to hide some fun and unique things inside the game.
I'm in the USA, and one of the things that Nintendo did here was use their original customer service phone number, 800-422-2602, as a pass key. If your enter this number combination on the NES version, the system emits a busy signal. This is completely useless and silly, but still fun. Then I started wondering about the Famicom version. Since this was a USA-based phone number, clearly this wouldn't work in the Famicom version, right?
Well I needed to put this to the test, so I grabbed my Japanese Famicom version of Punch Out I got from Japan Retro Direct, plugged in the cartridge and got to entering that code. Upon hitting that last number, it happened.
The system started playing a busy signal, just as supposedly the US version does! this is completely useless and does not do anything beyond provide amusement, but this is silly fun
I'm a bit surprised Nintendo incorporated this into the Famicom version, but I'm super glad that they did.
