Can You Use the Power Base Mini FM with a Hyperkin Genesis Clone?

I've always had an affinity for the Sega Genesis, even being a Nintendo Fanboy. The Genesis had some amazing titles, some definitive versions of titles that I played on the Super NES, and some amazing sports games. Hyperkin helps you relive the era of 16-bit Sega goodness with the Mega Retron HD, and HDMI-equipped Genesis and Mega Drive clone system. But in talking with Ryan from Castlemania Games and Rondo Products we both wondered if this system, which does work with Virtua Racing, can you use the Mega Retron HD Hyperkin Genesis Clone System with the Power Base Mini FM?

I started my testing by connecting the Composite video ports from the Mega Retron HD to the composite inputs on my RetroTink 4K. I turned the power on and, while it was composite video, it was 4K upscaled Composite video and it looked decent. Ok, so we have confirmed that the Mega Reton HD does indeed work with the RetroTink 4k. So what about the Power Base Mini FM?

We removed Virtua Racing and put in the Power Base Mini FM with Sonic the Hedgehog installed on top of it. I flipped on the power and, to my surprise, I heard that familiar music begin, and boom, there it was! That's right, at least via composite video the Power Base Mini FM DOES actually work with the Hyperkin Mega Retron HD! So what about via HDMI?

I disconnected the composite cables from the back of the Mega Retron HD and plugged in the HDM cable from the RetroTink 4K that fed into my capture card and plugged it into the system. Fingers crossed, I turned on the power and...

Nothing.

I tried again, reseating the cartridge in the slot just to be sure it was securely connected. I crossed my fingers and turned the power on and...

Still, nothing.

Well crud, it is so weird that the Power Base Mini FM works via composite video and not via HDMI. I don't understand why that is the case, and it's not related to the RetroTink 4K as I completely bypassed it. Oh well, but at least we have some options now moving forward.
