The Surge 2 Part 2
Part 2. I loved the first and this one is pretty cool as well, though I think after finishing this I prefer the first. That being said this one is still pretty rad. It's super short compared to the first game and most others in the genre. That's not necessarily a bad thing. A short souls-like experience can be great. The combat carries over the same mechanic from the first game in that you can target limbs and lop them off. That's freaking badass. If you see a piece of armor or weapon you want, cool, cut it off and it's yours. I love that. The upgrade system is pretty simple too. After you get said armor piece if you keep cutting parts off you get materials you can use to upgrade your armor. So if you have an arm piece you want to level up lop off some more arms and you can power up. Now you are limited by the levels of enemies so you aren't really going to have armor higher than the enemies you are fighting. It's a great way to cap the character and still balance the games difficulty. The difficulty is all over the place. You'll find some enemies are insanely easy to dispatch and then you'll fight the same group and get absolutely destroyed. It's a bit wild. The boss encounters are cool, some are cake walks while others requite some patience and others are just wildly hard. I don't think I disliked any of the bosses, but some were clearly more fun to fight. That does bring me to an issue I had with the combat. After you attack if you hold down the block button logic would dictate that after your attacking animation is done you would block, but nope you just stand there. So you have to wait for your attack animation to finish then you can hit block and block immediately. If you don't your character stands there like a fool doing nothing for 2 or 3 seconds then puts up their guard. How this wasn't noticed in quality assurance testing is crazy. I thought I was going crazy and I hate blaming games for my failures, but holy crap when I finally noticed it wasn't me, I actually felt better. They also introduce directional blocking which does take some time getting used to. You do get an accessory that tells you which direction attacks are coming from and is super helpful, though I still sometimes had a hard time getting the directions right. That's easily on me. I think I just hold the controller goofy and think that I'm pushing in the correct directions and I'm just slightly off. Maybe a big hand problem. The game does look nice and has some cool set pieces. There is a nice variety of enemies so it doesn't feel too stale. The DLC was cool but way too short. I thought it was going to be a huge new area, you can probably get through it in a couple of hours with a cool boss at the end, but it's not exactly amazing. It had such awesome potential. It's a fun but certainly flawed experience. Enjoy my blind playthrough.
