The Witcher 2 is actually playable on my computer...in theory, anyway. To get a frame rate which is "fluid" enough to handle any of the realtime combat and world exploration at all, it was necessary to both choose the lowest detail settings and also reduce the resolution to something as embarrassingly old school as 720*480. Then again, I only bought Witcher 2 because there was one of those bizarrely cheap pre-order offers on Direct2Drive (i.e. somewhere around half the retail price of a new PC title) and to be sure I have a copy of the game conveniently lying around (all 13 GB of it...) on my external hard drive when and if I buy a new computer.

Disregarding those glaringly obvious technical issues for a moment, my first impression of The Witcher 2 is that it feels very reminiscent of the original game in terms of things like the quest structure, storytelling, dialogue and voice acting (the last two in particular vary between being great and being downright cringe-worthy, which was likewise the case in TW1). As for the combat, it has definitely been made a lot faster and also been enhanced with a more traditional action RPG combo system, which nonetheless seems a lot more challenging than most realtime RPG systems (more specifically, getting flanked or surrounded means Geralt's health goes down very rapidly and most of his attacks are likely to be interrupted).

I don't know how much of this game I'll bother to play on my current computer (probably not much), but at the very least it's nice to get a brief glimpse of what this highly anticipated, quintessential PC release is all about.
