TheZeroEquals Gaming - Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon - Classic Edition - The Zero Hour Play!
Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon is where the Far Cry team can be seen fully letting their hair down and riding down the road with their flowy locks whipping through the synth-licked sky, middle-finger flying proudly in the air.
Okay, so maybe that picture's not exactly what's happening here, but it feels so damn close, they released this game (along with Far Cry 3) twice. The footage here is from the "Classic Edition" - which is a re-port of the PC edition on "Ultra" settings. But damn, if these two don't feel like they could have been 'remastered' versions.
Where the initial paragraph in this description is really reflected though is in the game's approach, theme, and attitude.
Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon is unlike any game in the franchise so far and since in that its protagonist Rex "Power" Colt (played with deft and subtle nuance by Michael Biehn, aka Kyle Reese himself) is a badass out of the gate. A cyborg military commando with all the trappings of an 80's American film action hero. If you're willing to not take much of anything this game offers up seriously...scratch that, YOU HAVE TO not take anything Blood Dragon offers you with any sense of true drama. It's overflowing with references and winks and nods to an age of untethered machismo that begs for ridicule and the game owns it.
From the Predator homage, to the insane early plot-twist over theatrics, to the over-wash of synth-neon vibe, Far Cry 3 - Blood Dragon has layers of charm and nostalgia built into it to make it one of a kind (at this point). Oh yeah, and then there's that tricky element of the titular "Blood Dragons" - NOTE the "S" in Blood Dragons. Yes, there are neon colored, bus-sized dragons roaming the dystopian nuclear-baked land we find ourselves on. Nonetheless, Rex is tasked with killing the bad guys, getting the girl and saving the world" - no biggie.
*Note version shown here is the "Classic" edition and offers an improved visual presentation from the original.
