Train Simulator 2019: Longboiler Adventures (1) The Dunsfold Line
This is the first video on my channel to feature the North Eastern Railway 1001 class, otherwise known as the Longboiler. This engine was made - for Train Simulator - by Victorian Lad, and is available from Digital Traction.
The layout featured in this video is the Dunsfold Light Railway, which is available on UKTrainSim, I think. The route is only around 0.5 miles long. I chose this route because it seems to have reasonable frame-rates, even when I'm recording.
In this video, we take the Longboiler out of the yard at Dunsfold, and couple up to a very short train in the platform. Also seen in the yard is a GWR 44xx class, and an S100. Just to annoy the purists again, I gave the Longboiler a Great Western Toplight coach and Toad brakevan to pull. Once coupled up, we take the Longboiler out to the other end of the line, and back to Dunsfold.
The reason I put a Toad brakevan on the consist is because it would help me when the train was going backwards. This is because it has a passenger view where it places you on the veranda at the back. This gives perfect visibility, and means you can do a glorified push-pull operation.
The specific member of the class that features in this video is 1275 - the only Longboiler that has survived into preservation. This engine was built for the North Eastern Railway in 1874, by Dubs & Co of Glasgow. The engine had an impressive 49 year long working life. As well as 1275, there were a further 191 Longboilers built. Curiously, 1275 was the only member of her class to survive into LNER ownership, being withdrawn in February 1923.
The engine was restored to working order, and took part in the locomotive cavalcade at the Stockton & Darlington centenary celebrations in 1925. Sadly, that was the last time 1275 ever ran under her own steam. Thankfully, the engine has beaten the odds and survived into the 21st century. You can find her on display at the National Railway Museum in York.
New Zealand also has a preserved steam engine with the number 1275. Except our 1275 is a JA class 4-8-2 tender engine built in 1951, not an 0-6-0 built in 1874.
