It's a little-known fact that Fallout 3 and New Vegas were among the very last games to support DirectSound3D, which was killed off in Vista. By enabling the games in Creative ALchemy, X-Fi soundcard owners could get 7.1 surround sound or HRTF with CMSS-3D. Fortunately, there exists a far superior way to restore 3D positional audio in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. By using DSOAL, the DS3D calls get wrapped to OpenAL Soft which has built-in HRTF and 7.1 surround support on ANY soundcard!


INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Download DSOAL from http://kcat.strangesoft.net/dsoal-bin.zip
2. Unzip to /Fallout 3 or /Fallout New Vegas game directory.
3. Go into %APPDATA% and create a new text file named "alsoft.ini".
4. Copy and paste the following into your new alsoft.ini.
[General]
channels=stereo
frequency=44100
stereo-mode=headphones
default-hrtf=Built-In 44100hz
hrtf=true
drivers="-dsound,"
5. Save the file then launch the game to get binaural audio in Fallout 3 or New Vegas. To uninstall, simply delete the "dsound.dll" and "dsoal-aldrv.dll" files.


Alternatively, you could set "channels=" to either "quad", "surround51", "surround51rear", or "surround71" for full surround sound speaker support instead. The more daring viewers out there can experiment by using one of the personalized HRTF tables demonstrated in this video:
