Near-Field HRTF comparison: CMSS-3D vs OpenAL Soft spatial sound 🎧
Use headphones only with any virtual surround features turned off. Listen with your eyes closed for the most accurate results.
0:15 CMSS-3D (MacroFX on)
1:39 OpenAL Soft
This video is supplementary to a previous comparison I made between Hardware X-Fi, Software X-Fi, and OpenAL Soft HRTF. It shows off one of the biggest weaknesses of OpenAL Soft as an HRTF provider: it lacks the all-important Near-Field HRTF. Known as "MacroFX" on the CMSS-3D and its predecessor by Sensaura, this feature allows for much greater positional audio within one meter of the audio listener source. Without Near-Field HRTF, it becomes impossible to determine if a sound is closer than an arm's reach with OpenAL Soft. Granted, this won't really come up that often in gameplay, but it does affect certain sounds like missed Brute rockets in Unreal Gold vs Aureal A3D 2.0. This video was tested with the built-in KEMAR tables on OpenAL Soft for a more direct comparison with CMSS-3D's "average head" HRTF table. OpenAL Soft sound in RightMark 3DSound program was achieved using DSOAL.
